With ordinary talent and extraordinary perseverance, all things are achievableThomas Fowell Buxton had once said. The saying goes for CBSE student Gaurav Sharma, who scored 97.6 percent in grade 12. The 18-year-old stood undaunted in the face of adversity, including his family’s precarious financial condition.
A student of Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya, Surajmal Vihar, Gaurav of the Government of Delhi, was the top of his school in the science stream, with 99 points for Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics and 98 points for Computer Science.
While Gaurav’s successful journey may look rosy, it certainly wasn’t a rosy bed. He had struggles in abundance.
Tarkeshwar Nath Sharma, Gaurav’s father, works as a plumber to earn a living, among other menial jobs. As the family’s sole breadwinner, he struggled financially, but he never let his children feel any pressure. Nath barely earns Rs 500 a day. Despite all the setbacks, he encouraged his children to dream big and take on challenges.

In conversation with Indian TV, Gaurav opened up about his past, present and future journey. To achieve his dreams, Gaurav wants to get into an IIT and pursue B.Tech in Computer Science. He also plans to go abroad.
“I expected to get about 95%, but a score of 97.6% was unimaginable. There were challenges from Covid, studies were online … but I got full support from my mother, father and teachers. My father constantly encouraged me no matter what our situation was He always bought me books without even thinking about the cost His struggle motivates me to such an extent that I really want to change my life and make sure there are there will be no financial constraints in the future. I want to follow B Tech in Computer Science and also plan to go abroad,” said Gaurav.
His father said that he never let personal struggles become an obstacle in Gaurav’s studies, and motivated him to achieve his goal.
“I have always told Gaurav that you will not achieve anything without education in life. I pushed him to work hard to be successful,” his father said.
Gaurav, an avid reader, devoted much of his day to his studies, while also being active in sports, especially football. He thanked the CBSE, its principal and teachers who fully supported him throughout his journey.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the results of Class 12 on July 30. The Delhi region recorded a 99.83 percent success rate. While girls achieved a 99.95 percent success rate, it was 99.72 for boys. A total of 875 government schools in Delhi have achieved a 100 percent pass rate this year. The number of schools achieving this feat has more than doubled since last year’s figure of 396.
The overall pass rate of the government schools in Delhi was 99.96 percent.
Overall, the CBSE posted the highest-ever pass rate of 99.37 in this year’s grade 12 results, with girls outperforming boys by a thin margin of 0.54 percent.
Students were assessed this year under an alternative grading policy following the cancellation of board exams due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The grades of class 10 and 11 and internal assessment during class 12 have been taken into account.
