WAPELLO — The Wapello School District and a former district roofer and his insurance company have reached a settlement over the school’s claim for damages related to a roof repair project in 2020.
The school board held a special meeting Monday to announce the settlement with T&K Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc., Ely and Continental Insurance Co.
The terms of the settlement have not been disclosed.
According to previous discussions, T&K submitted the low bid of $470,070 for the roofing during the January 15, 2020 board meeting. The work included repairs to the roof of the main high school building, the roof of the main gymnasium, a lower roof that extends around the main gymnasium, and an awning covering the west entrance to the school near the greenhouse.
During the repairs, school officials reported that rainwater had begun to leak into the auditorium. The school’s architect for the roof repair project attributed the type of roof installed in 2014 to the cause of the spill, but school administrators disagreed and pointed the finger at T&K.
The board instructed Superintendent Mike Peterson to consult with the school’s attorney in September 2020 about filing a legal complaint against T&K and negotiations apparently began shortly thereafter.
While the terms of the settlement were not disclosed, school officials said the work to repair the initial damage caused by the leak was about $35,000.
The board has indicated that it will now seek bids to complete restoration work on the auditorium and use the settlement funds to fund that work, in addition to covering the previous damage.
