Local plumbing and HVAC experts encourage home tune-ups during school year

“When parents are enjoying the summer holidays with their children, the last thing on their mind is household maintenance,” he said Tim Daley, general manager of Wolfer’s Home Services. “It can be difficult to keep up with the HVAC or plumbing chores with kids by your side 24/7, so now is the perfect time to take care of those maintenance needs. With the kids back in the classroom, the house is empty and ready for adjustments.”

Daley and the Wolfer’s Home Services team offer these three improvements for residents to tackle while their kids are in school:

  • Check and flush the boiler: It is important for homeowners to flush their water heaters consistently to minimize the amount of sediment on the bottom of the unit. This can easily be done while the kids are away, and it helps extend the life of the water heater to ensure you continue to have hot water too. During this time, there is also the option to install a new tankless water heater. These alternatives offer an on-demand style of hot water that eliminates cold showers or baths. These systems can be extremely efficient as they only consume energy when hot water is in use.
  • Clean your garbage disposal: Many believe that garbage disposal can be used for any type of food that needs to be thrown away. That is not the case. Starchy and fibrous foods can damage waste disposal. These foods can also get stuck in the system and cause bad odors. Leaving baking soda and vinegar in the drain before flushing can help clean the system. For a more consistently clean scent, grind lemon or orange peels regularly.
  • Schedule an HVAC Tuning: Temperatures will soon drop and homeowners want to make sure their systems are in top shape before the change. Routine maintenance keeps the unit operating at optimum levels for a longer period of time, leading to increased efficiency and lower energy bills. Tune-ups also help identify potential issues that can be fixed before the colder months.

“If your goal is to keep your energy bills low and maintain comfort, it’s important to keep your home running at optimal levels,” Daley said. “If the kids are out of the house for several hours, you can work on doing HVAC and plumbing tasks that couldn’t be handled in the summer.”
