Pimlico Plumbers founder Charlie Mullins has sold the company for more than £125m – and says he will now focus on the music industry and run for mayor of London.

Mullins has just sold Pimlico Plumbers to US home services Neighborly for between £125m and £145m, according to sources close to the deal.

Speaking to The Mirror, Mullins said: “It was a big decision to make, to leave completely. I’ve spent my whole life with Pimlico. But I’ve handed it over to good people. Neighborly has the same work ethic as myself, and they have the financial backing.

“I am also thrilled that my son Scott will continue as chief executive.”

He added: “I’ve had a lot of support over the years from people on Twitter, talking about how I look and how I speak, and about the Brexit thing.

“All I can say to those sad little people is, I’ve got over £100 million for that company, so who’s laughing now?”

Charlie Mullins is one of the business world’s fiercest opponents of Brexit

Mullins is one of the most talked-about opponents of Brexit, and once told The Mirror that he would do “anything that can slow down or stop Brexit”.

Pimlico Plumbers was founded by Mullins in 1979 as just themselves and a bag of tools, but has grown to employ 440 people and have a turnover of £43.27 million in the year to 31 May 2020.

It completes over 100,000 plumbing and other service jobs to London homeowners and businesses each year.

Mullins said he would now focus on several ventures, including the music industry.

He said: “I say I want to get interested in the music industry, it’s going extremely well. An act I help, Rara, has a single called ‘Biker Boy’ in October.

“She’s so good, she’s going to be the next Amy Winehouse.

“I don’t know anything about music, but I have quite a business brain and I act as a business consultant.”

He added that he owns a number of real estate companies in Spain and is talking to a Spanish lawyer about getting citizenship so he can spend more time in Marbella.

He also has plans to revive his 2018 bid to become mayor of London, currently held by Sadiq Khan.

“I couldn’t focus too much on it before because of Pimlico,” he said.

“One of the reasons is that people would have said it was in Pimlico’s favour. But that’s on the cards for if they kick the guy out or he resigns.

“The only thing I’m not going to do is retire. And one thing’s for sure: I won’t unclog toilets anymore.”

Mullins is known for his love of expensive cars

Mullins added that he is also looking forward to Pimlico Plumber’s December party, held in part to thank the company’s students.

In June, Pimlico Plumbing introduced a ‘no jab, no job’ policy, four months after announcing it was included in all new contracts.

The company started posting vacancies with the “Covid-19 vaccination required” clause.

It was the company’s first listing of its controversial new internal job posting policy.
