Bank robbers tied hostages to the roofs and hoods of their getaway cars to prevent the police from firing on them after carefully planned raids. The robberies, which involved about 20 men with assault rifles, targeted three banks in Araçatuba, Sao Paulo state. Three people were killed, including one that was seen filming the gang.
Shortly after 1 a.m., the group closed off the city center by hijacking and setting fire to cars, blocking entry points. Several cars were set on fire around the local police station.
Branches of the Banco do Brasil, Banco Safra and Caixa Econômica were looted, with an undisclosed amount of cash stolen. A drone seen over the city during the raids was apparently used to monitor police movements.
