Smoke at Charleston Harbor Resort from malfunctioning HVAC system

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) — The Mount Pleasant Fire Department said it responded to a reported fire at the Charleston Harbor Resort Wednesday morning.

Mount Pleasant Fire Department Representative Matthew Tidwell says they responded at 20 Patriots Point Road.

When it was reported, Tidwell said firefighters were preparing for a possible fire in a building.

Tidwell says crews arrived at the 4-story hotel and helped hotel guests and employees out of the structure. He says the fire service has been investigating what caused the smoke odor and smoke scene in the structure.

Finally, Tidwell confirmed with firefighters at the scene that the smoke seen was caused by an HVAC system that was malfunctioning.

He says this caused smoke in the lobby, but the crews turned that system off and disconnected the power.

Crews are now releasing workers, and Tidwell says guests will be allowed back into the building. Tidwell says the incident is isolated.

No injuries were reported, Tidwell said.
